Celebrate Your Body and Its Changes Too! The Ultimate Puberty Book for Girls Sonya Renee Taylor Bianca I Laureano 9781641521666 Books Reviews

  • I've researched dozens dozens of books for my 10y.o niece, and 'Celebrate Your Body' is EXACTLY what I was looking for!

Everything in Sonya Renee Taylor's approach is positive and encouraging. She acknowledges many colors and body types and provides just the right amount of detail for a tween/pre-teen reader.

*Every other book I researched in this genre had an inordinate focus on appearance traditional notions of beauty.* Something I wanted to avoid.
They also, without exception, addressed interest in "boys" - excluding anyone who might not be interested in boys reinforcing the confusion they may be feeling about not being "normal." To be clear, the book doesn't encourage or even go into detail on this topic, it simply refers to developing feelings for "someone" using generic pronouns. This is just one example of Sonya Renee Taylor's subtle approach to inclusiveness cultural sensitivity.

If you're looking for an encouraging, straightforward, medically accurate, inclusive guide for your 9-12y.o, This. Is. Your. Book.

Adult readers If you haven't already checked out the author's other book, "The Body Is Not An Apology," I highly recommend doing so. Sonya Renee Taylor is a gift to Humanity ♡
  • I was going to purchase a different but well - known book about puberty for my daughter, but read quite a number of negative reviews about how that book gave their daughters insecurities about their bodies... which is what I was trying to avoid by purchasing such a book! Celebrate Your Body is the complete opposite! It's informative in a helpful, kind, and realistic way. I highly recommend this book for any parent/guardian of a pre-teen girl.
  • When I first set out to find a book for my daughter to learn about puberty and body stuff, I figured it would be pretty simple. I had seen that American Girl book in stores over the years and figured I would probably just get that. Then I read some excerpts and reviews and I was aghast. Then I realized that that wasn't the only one! My biggest issues with most of these books are about the focus on eating disorders and trying to be skinny, even if the point is ultimately to reassure girls that they don't need to do that. Um...my 11-year-old is very comfortable in her body and it has never occurred to her that she has to be (or remain) thin or anything else. I've worked hard to protect her from society's stupid messages about these expectations. Why would I hand her a book to stoke insecurities that don't even exist? Other books also approach relationships and safe sex conversations, which I also find astounding. It's fine if people are ready to have those conversations with their kids, but my daughter doesn't need that content yet, so I don't really want to hand it to her in a book about her changing body.

Enter Sonya Renee Taylor. I love her for this book, which I just read in its entirety as a preview. She talks about bodies as powerful and amazing (instead of beautiful). She emphasizes that everything that happens during puberty is just right for each girl's body. She goes into just the right amount of detail and steers clear of sex, relationships, and eating disorders. It's the perfect balance and it's so empowering. I hope my daughter internalizes every message in this book, from loving her body at every stage to making her own choices about whether or not to shave or wear a bra. This book is what every pre-pubescent, pubescent, and maybe even post-pubescent female needs.
  • My daughter started the puberty train ( as Sonya describes it) when she was about 5. I noticed her leg hairs were getting darker and at the time, I didn't think much about it. And then around 6 it was confirmed by her doctor. She is now 7 and has started growing hair.. now there was no more pushing the talk. After tremendous research and reading countless reviews, I finally settled for this book and I couldn't be more happy with my decision.

First and I think most importantly, the book has such a positive outlook on a girls body and the changes they will experience.

Second and what I also feel is important, the author often mentions that this changes can come earlier for some girls while later for other girls. I love that she mentions that girls can start as early as 5 or 6. As a mother of a child starting puberty at a young age, it is very important for my child to hear it's very normal from an outside source.

I also like that this book didn't cover sexual intercourse and topics related to intercourse because my child is still too young for that talk and I don't have to worry about her stumbling across that in the book. The book was written simply enough that it was easy to understand and felt like you were having a conversation. Younger readers will be able easily follow along. So that goes without saying that this book just just an introduction to their body's and will need another book to cover the other half of the puberty train.
  • This is the book I wish I had a tween. I bought it for my daughter and read through it ahead of time. Its appropriate, very body positive, encouraging, and filled to the brim with great messages and information about puberty. Its inclusive about body types, skin colors, and hair types. Its non judgmental and doesn't tell a girl what she ought to be doing with her body, and it approaches some topics like shaving in a way that lets the child know that the choice is theirs to make and whatever they choose is a valid way to take care of their body. The overall lesson is consistently self acceptance and personal empowerment. I would LOVE to see an equivalent book for my sons!

Toni’s no stranger to making mistakes. She has experienced firsthand how walking down the wrong path can send life spiraling out of control. Fortunately, she had someone to drag her from the gutter and help set her on the right track. As penance for the poor choices of her past, she pledges to suppress her baser desires and focus on finding a steady, dependable man, even if that means embracing a boring lifestyle.

The last thing anyone would call Zach is dull. As Enforcer for the Hell's Handlers MC, he embodies the outlaw lifestyle. When Toni moves in next door, Zach can't resist the possibility of a quick, hot, fling. But he soon discovers she's not the easy conquest he's used to.

While Zach works to convince Toni she belongs in his bed, a tenuous relationship with a local gang disintegrates and threatens his MC family. Zach's world is turned upside down when he's unable to keep the danger from touching his club.

As Toni fights to resist Zach's pull, her own peace is shattered by demons from her past. With enemies both old and new barreling down, she throws out her rules and turns to Zach for aid. Soon, she finds herself firmly entrenched in Zach's dangerous world.

Is it possible for her to curb her desires, or is she doomed to repeat the mistakes of her past? None of it will matter if Zach can't keep their enemies at bay.

"Zach was the first book in Lilly Atlas’ new series, Hell’s Handlers MC. I’m a huge Atlas fan and this new series was no different.

Zach was the Enforcer for the Hell’s Handlers MC in Townsend, TN, which was nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains. He was gorgeous, confident, brash, arrogant and uber protective. The club was the only thing and everything to him.

Toni went back to Townsend for the first time in years when her estranged parents died unexpectedly and left her their house and Diner. She was only back for a few weeks until she could sell both and then get back to her conservative and straight laced Chicago life. She never expected to develop a friendship and fling with her next door neighbor, the bad boy biker.

I loved the suspenseful storyline that focused on the MC challenges but then meshed into Toni’s life as well. I also loved the characters. They were strong, snarky, independent and fun. Actually I loved everything about the book, except the editing errors. Unfortunately, there were more than my liking. Without those, it was a definite five star.

All in all, it was a great start to a new MC series. It set the stage for many wonderful stories and I can’t wait to dive in further. Next up is Maverick."

Zach Hell Handlers MC Book 1 edition by Lilly Atlas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • When Toni comes back home to bury her parents she wants to change things her parents had done that she always hated. Number one being to get rid of the sign in the window saying they won’t Serves bikers.

I have loved all of Lilly Atlas’s books, but I think this is the best one yet. Between facing demons and realizing that home is where she wanted to be, Toni’s journey changed from the safe, boring track back to the confidant, happy track that she deserved.

This story resonated with me, but for some there are triggers that may affect them. Sexual abuse, control, violence and drugs were talked about. Despite these themes I feel that it was positively handled and was an amazing story!

Finally this story was about surviving and excelling in life despite your upbringing, despite your bad choices and despite circumstances. I recommend this story and love that Lilly Atlas has another Hit!
  • Zach oh my Zach he is everything a girl wants in a man. He is a bada$$ biker, hot as hell man dripping with sexiness and very protective over his family and his club.

Zach comes home one day to see his next door neighbors daughter. She has come home for her parents funeral. Once Zach realizes who she is he goes over to offer his condolences and when he sees her he knows he has to have her in his bed just once. A taste of the neighbors daughter who he remembers always watching him when he was growing up but could never say anything to him because her parents were afraid of bikers.

Toni is in town for a short time just long enough for the funeral and to sell the family diner. But things change when she goes into the diner and remembers how she was raised in this diner. The more time she stays in the diner the more she wants to move back and keep the diner.

Then Toni and Zach get together and she decides to have a summer of fun and then go back to her life but what happens is anything but that. When trouble comes knocking on Toni's door Zach is determined to keep her safe and make her his Old Lady. As the trouble heats up and Toni gets hurt Zach is determined to rain down hell on this gang.

Can Zach save Toni in time before she is destroyed and hurt?
  • Zach was the first book in Lilly Atlas’ new series, Hell’s Handlers MC. I’m a huge Atlas fan and this new series was no different.

  • I have never read a Lilly Atlas book before and I was pleasantly surprised. I have been on the hunt for something in the romantic suspense genre and this popped so I decided to give it a try. Hot sexy bikers, a crazy ex boyfriend or two, and some twists and turns all should be a five star book for me. However, I had a hard time warming up to Toni the female lead in this book. I did eventually, but it was a tough journey for me to really like her and I am not sure why.

I will try more books by Ms. Atlas as I think she has all the elements I am looking for I just didn’t care for one character.
  • I loved this author's first MC series and I wondered how this new one would be different. But it is different and it's awesome. The female character overcomes some horrendous mistakes she made in her youth and is this strong independent woman. Zach, the biker, just thought he could have some fun for the time that she was in town, a good distraction from the issues plaguing his club. Both were unaware of the depth of their attraction for each other and how they complement and complete each other. Watching this relationship develop, with suspense and some humour was great. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down until I reached the conclusion. I've already pre-ordered the next book in this series and can hardly wait for it's release.
  • Toni and Zach.
I loved Lilly's last MC series, No Prisoners. I was very excited to see a new. It did not disappoint.
Toni past is not a pleasant one. She returns home after the death of her mother. The boy next door, Zach, is no longer a boy. He has grown into big man. He is the Enforcer for He''s Handlers MC.
The pull to her is something he can't ignore. He gives her one week to recover from breaking up with her boyfriend, then he's coming after her.
When her past becomes her present, he vows to save her.

It's a great start to a new series. Really liked it. I'm sure you will too.
  • My first book by this author. I found her looking around. I've read other MC books by other people. But I can honestly say you've been the best by far. I love the ups and downs one mile your laughing and the next you need a tissue. I enjoyed all the different stories with In the main and first story. Ata no point did I get bored or loose interest . Thank you for a well written story from beginning to ending .I love how involved I was in all the twists and turns. I felt the story played out with perfect timing. A few times I was taken back with which way the story went. I enjoy the entire book I will be looking and reading this series and many of the others you've written
Thank you for writing a very entertaining first book and again very much looking forward to seeing the other characters develop

The Five edition by Lily White Romance eBooks Reviews

  • Wow, Oh Wow, Oh WOW. I devoured, absolutely DEVOURED this book.
Lily White has served us up a wicked, sinful, deviously delightfully story.

We meet Rainey, a simple woman who is being interviewed by Justin, a victims advocate told in dual POV. We are taken back to the beginning of just how Rainey became the sole survivor of a brutal slaying. This is a slow burn of a read and there are many layers that need to get peeled back and we are lucky enough to get a front row seat to the life of Rainey.

This is where I was in life. Just like Rowan had said. A toy that men ******. A party favor. An entertainment and nothing else.

To say the least this is Erotica at its finest. It’s super hot, the sex is sinful and debasing (just how I like my books) but Rainey’s life has so many triggers so if you can put them aside then sit down, buckle up and get ready for a roller coaster of a ride.

I have read all of Ms White’s books and this is by far my most favourite of her standalone stories
  • Holy hell! I’m speechless well not really just sitting here with my mouth open and actually excited. Yeah I know I’m a sick woman but damn this book definitely is one of the best dark books I’ve ever read and I’ve read a ton! “Our love story was a different beast, one filled with insanity, with heartache and misfortune.” My favorite quote from this book but there is soo many it’s hard to choose. This book is dark, intense, gritty and pure insane and I loved every page! The Five is definitely one book I’ll never forget. Warning if your not into dark don’t read it but if you love dark romance and some sick nasty stuff then I bet you will love it as much as I do! 5/5 stars oh and nope not giving any spoilers. Just enjoy Rainey’s story 😈😍😈 TOP DARK READ OF 2019!
  • I really don't think that I have the words to do this book justice. From the first page till the last I was held in its grip. Rainey Summer Day. What a name, what a girl, what a story! This girl's life would have brought most people to their knees. She never knew anything in her life but having her body used by men. So she began to see her body as a commodity. When she is the lone survivor in a massacre Justin is sent in to evaluate her. Is she a victim or a killer? Told in alternating points of view from Rainey and Justin, the story goes back and forth in time between the present and the years leading up to the murders. Go into this blind. This book is best read without any spoilers. I have to say that this is my new favorite book by this author.
  • My full review is on GR.

    Liked -
The plot and full of twists.
    Intriguing characters.
    Never a dull moment.
Suspense is at an all-time high.
I loved that it was not the typical plot.
Loved the authors writing, and her way with words.
    So, creative.
    Definitely worth reading.
    Highly addictive.

    Disliked -
The ending. Only because I wanted that sugar-sugar

This is not your average love story.
  • This book was described as a romantic suspense. It may have been suspenseful and that’s questionable but is was definitely not a romance. There was not one character in this book that was not insane or despicable. Don’t be misled by the cover. I have written many reviews and I cannot remember saying I hate a book but I hated this book. I love good bad boy or dark romance but I need someone to cheer for or fall in love with. I could go on and on about this book there were so many negatives. I only reason I gave it 2 stars in place of one is because I managed to finish the book.
  • It's dark, and the characters aren't altogether likable. You have to decide for yourself if this is the evolution love must take to survive in a world of darkness, or if it morphed from something beautiful into something ugly.

All I know is, well, this love survived... against all odds.

If you aren't trigger-sensitive, read this book... and try your hardest to go in blind. Lily will make it allllll worth it!
  • This story consumed me from start to finish. Loved the unfolding. Some parts were difficult to get through. Disappointed with Justin, but didn’t particularly like his ultimate fate. Side note, had any character in this story ever heard of STDs? Because not a single condom was used in the making of this book.
  • The Five, is one dark mindfu**ery story of love, death and seduction. Read The Five to learn about Rainey's life and the truth about The Five!

When I had to put it down to adult, I couldn't stop thinking about it!! It's a must read!!

BugFree Organic Gardening Controlling Pest Insects without Chemicals Anna Hess 9781510741980 Books Reviews

  • Many reasons to like this book--it's well written and organized and is clearly based on Anna's lived experience on her homestead in Virginia. It's not theory--she walks the walk. I liked that she included commentaries from her blog readers living in a wide variety of parts of the US (Portland; Missouri; Texas) to give perspectives from other biomes--I doubt I'll run into crayfish holes in my arid California garden! It's not encyclopedic but when she thinks the reader would need more information she cites specific books or web resources for that. Intriguing surprises she's not much for traditional companion planting and explains why, and outlines how succession planting and trap crops can work in her own experience. She also isn't big on the use of chickens, ducks or other domestic animals as pest controllers in most gardens and cites the reasons, although she uses a chicken tractor in a very limited way. She outlines why she (and many of her readers) prefers to use wild predators instead, and how elegantly it can work. The book is heavily illustrated with color photos from her own and other contributors' gardens. I think what I learned the most from was seeing how her brain works--from reading this text you can see her example of using careful observation, research, and trial and error to fine tune moving her garden forward each season. As a novice gardener I'm glad I bought it and will check out her other books.
  • Great book for all gardeners who fight battle with bugs in the garden. I love her writing and easy to understand style. I love her photographs, they clearly show what she is talking about. Anna and her husband grow their own food in Virginia. You get her personal story and her personal battle with bugs. I can connect with her through her personal journey to get rid of pests in the garden. Anna teaches us to identify the bad bugs first. She uses a Mother Earth News map and survey showing the worst bugs in each region. She gives a couple of resources for learning about the bugs in your garden, her favorite book and an online resource. Anna gives us the worst bugs, how to promote good bugs, pollinators, ecosystem bugs, box turtle friends who eat slugs and snails, letting nature take it's course, outthinking the bugs, choosing resistant plant varieties, using row covers, keeping plants healthy, hands on bug control-yes picking them off and eating blemished fruit. She gives all this great information and writes it in an entertaining style along with photographs from her garden. This book is a treat! Also at the end you will find a preview of another of her books Homegrown Hummus and Cover Crops. Every gardener needs a copy of this great garden book - I just love it! Get your copy today!
  • This book is so valuable for a gardener! It not only well-written, the photos are many and excellent for identifying pests. Once again this author has written a keeper of a book. This one should be kept by every gardener. Identifying pests becomes so easy and she gives ways of controlling the pests with natural means or safe remedies and the book gives info on good and bad creatures in your garden. Altho mainly for vegetable and fruit gardening there is also good info on flower pests. She writes as if she is sitting across from you and she shares what did or didnt work for her. Love it!
  • The Naturally Bug-Free Garden gives sage advice about how to garden without the use of pesticides or poisons. Writing from her own experience and research, the author provides extremely valuable techniques for dealing with many garden pests. She uses, not only gardening but ecological and environmental practices to thwart enemies of the plants. Her practices match my own experiences as a chemical-free gardener. Anna Hess shows how to attract beneficial bugs to the garden, tells about plant methods of self-defense, explains the role of nutrition in plant protection, and how plant rotation can contribute to keeping bad bugs at bay. Her fluent and humorous writing style captivates the reader while providing great insights for gardeners at every experiential level. This book covers many more topics than those mentioned here. I highly recommend this book to anyone who does anything in a garden! There are so many gems of wisdom in this book!
  • I was very excited to receive this book as I have problems with several insects in my arid, clay based vegetable garden that I'd like to mitigate without chemicals. This book is simply not researched well enough. The writer obviously has years of experience gardening but she uses Mother Earth News as her only source. She also gives several first person accounts of other gardeners which is useful but I felt like she barely touched on the issues she lays out in her table of contents. This is very quick read with good photos but it's at best an outline of the subject covered with limited use.
  • If you are a gardner who is interested in finding out what are good pest and bad pest I highly recommend this book.. I have found it very interesting.
I have found that there are good insects to control the bad ones and you do not need to use poisons on flowers and vegetables to keep you healthy.
I do Highly Recommend it to anyone interested in being a serious gardner.
  • This was and is a very information filled book. But I feel let down because I simply wanted the book to take longer to read through. It is a book worthy of any one looking to improve there foundational knowledge of food growing almost naturally.
  • Love knowing about what I am up against with my first garden the book would have been a five star if it had some pointers about matching plants together to help like growing cucumbers over your squash stops the borer. But in all worth getting)

Whenever Bakhtin, in his final decade, was queried about writing his memoirs, he shrugged it off. Unlike many of his Symbolist generation, Bakhtin was not fascinated by his own self-image. This reticence to tell his own story was the point of access for Viktor Duvakin, Mayakovsky scholar, fellow academic, and head of an oral history project, who in 1973 taped six interviews with Bakhtin over twelve hours. They remain our primary source of Bakhtin’s personal views  on formative moments in his education and exile, his reaction to the Revolution, his impressions of political, intellectual, and theatrical figures during the first two decades of the twentieth century, and his non-conformist opinions on Russian and Soviet poets and musicians. Bakhtin's passion for poetic language and his insights into music also come as a surprise to readers of his essays on the novel. One remarkable thread running through the conversations is Bakhtin's love of poetry, masses of which he knew by heart in several languages. Mikhail Bakhtin The Duvakin Interviews, 1973, translated and annotated here from the complete transcript of the tapes, offers a fuller, more flexible image of Bakhtin than we could have imagined beneath his now famous texts.
