On the Hard in Paradise Connie Fleenor 9780984675005 Books Reviews

  • I recently read this book by Connie Fleenor. Having known Connie and Brian for many years, I was aware of their escape to the warmer winds. But until I read her book I did not know the details. These are conveyed very well in her book, in a crisp and professional style, laced with laughs, most of them friendly, but a few, how to say it --- a tad more on the sharper side.

In addition to learning a bit about their tropical lives, I came away also much better informed about life on the islands more generally, including the good and the bad. Having been there once for a week or so, but more or less confined to the "for tourists" hotels and beaches, I was very interested to get a much broader picture. This was indeed provided in this nicely written combination life story and guidebook.

Armed with my new knowledge, when I return to that area, I will NEVER attempt to park a car near the top of the hill. Neither will you, if you read the book, which I enthusiastically suggest.
  • If you are thinking about traveling to the Virgin Islands, buying a sail boat or just plain want to laugh out load, pick up a copy of Connie Fleenor's "On the Hard in Paradise".

This very detailed story of what life is like living on a boat kept me engaged and the crafty sense of humor had me constantly chuckling. For me to have read the majority of this book in four days attests to the plot being filled with excitement, emotion and useful information about island life.

I connected to the author through her sense of humor and her outgoing way of life. The novel depicts hard times but surrounds those experiences with brilliant tales of sailing, traveling and getting among the locals. As I read the book I could practically feel the sand between my toes. The descriptions of the Islands were fantastic! The boat "Take Two" was perfectly named as the author described her plan to shake up her marriage.

I recommend reading this book! You won't regret it.
  • This book has it all. It is witty, fun, real and personal. Connie is amazing at telling hilarious stories and detailing the adventures that come with living the island life. She also goes into the "hard" that comes along with chasing ones dreams and starting a new life in a foreign environment. It takes guts to uproot ones life and to go live on a yacht in paradise, guts that most of us will never have. Definitely a great read!
  • Fleenor's book describes the adventures of relocating to a sailboat in the Virgin Islands with all the joy's and frustrations such an endeavor would include. Fleenor's account is personal and honest allowing the reader to truly experience the ups and downs of the whole thing. Often, very funny other times you feel the frustration and absurdity of it all. A great read! Be prepared to have your perception of a tropical paradise changed forever.
  • This was a compelling, yet difficult book to read. The desciption of living on a boat that is dry docked for almost a year while a marriage crumbles was detailed and heartfelt. However it was really hard to read as the author went through the pain of a failing marriage.
  • Having been to St. Thomas and the VI's, this book seemed somewhat familiar. Nonetheless, the grounded reality of the experience this woman endured sheds an immense light on the VI's. If you ever fantasize about re-locating there for even a brief moment, read this book.
  • It's an easy book to read and a joy to share in her adventures. Lots of good behind-the-scenes information for anyone considering such a lifestyle, or contemplating a trip to the Virgin Islands.
  • Good story but it did go on a bit, nothing much happened,at the end, they divorced
